General Information

School Structure

Merlin is divided into a Pre-School (age 3+), a Lower School and an Upper School. Reception and Year 1 make up the Lower School; Years 2 and 3 form the Upper School.

The School Week

Our school hours are 8.30am to 3.30pm, Monday to Thursday and 8.30am to 12.30pm on Fridays. There is also the option for Merlin children of all ages to attend after-school care, run by Beams of Light. Beams of Light operate on-site every afternoon until 6pm. This service includes a host of activities and a substantial snack. See below for Merlin’s after-school clubs.

School Motto

Our school motto, ‘Have a Go,’ reflects our belief in nurturing a positive attitude towards learning, encouraging each child to step out of their comfort zone and develop resilience.

Support and Pastoral Care

We seek to provide an atmosphere in which every pupil is able to achieve his or her maximum potential in a supported environment. The school also recognises that pupils will only achieve their best in an environment in which they feel safe, valued and respected.

Assemblies

We hold assemblies twice a week for the whole school, on a Monday and Friday. Class assemblies are performed once a week and parents are invited in to watch these in the Ballroom, as the audience.

Lunch

Lunches are prepared daily on the premises by our dedicated catering staff. We offer brown bread and fresh fruit with every meal and can accommodate special dietary needs.

Home and School

There’s an open-door policy at the Merlin School and we believe communication between home and school is key. Parents have the opportunity to meet teachers in the playground daily and can also make an appointment to see us at other times to suit. Throughout the year, we hold two parents’ evenings and you will receive two reports of your child’s progress.

Clubs & Trips

Merlin runs a variety of after-school clubs on a Monday for the Upper School, as well as Chess Club (at a small additional cost) on a Wednesday afternoon. All of the year groups enjoy school trips each term and topic work is often reinforced by visits to appropriate places of interest or by interesting visitors to the school.

Beams of Light run after-school care provision including a host of activities and a substantial snack for Merlin children of all ages, Monday – Friday until 6pm.
