RECEPTION
Right from the word ‘go’ we immerse the children with investigations in Science. The Reception curriculum is very much based on practical sessions, with recording tasks in writing gradually introduced over the course of the year. Pupils are encouraged to observe in Science, in order to achieve the objective of getting them really excited about their learning. They investigate the world around them through topics such as the seasons, human senses, and the effects of heat and cold.
YEAR 1
Building on the Reception curriculum, the skills of scientific enquiry are further developed in Year 1 by including as many practical investigations as possible. Topics also encompass ‘Healthy Living’ themes and provide opportunities for the children to enjoy growing and studying plants.
YEAR 2
The principles of scientific enquiry continue to inform the Year 2 Science curriculum. Emphasis continues to lie in keeping the lessons as practical as possible. The importance of healthy living is reinforced along with investigations in new topics such as space and sound.
YEAR 3
Making the important connection between people and Science forms the basis of the Year 3 programme of study. The children continue to enjoy investigations and practical experiments. Pupils record their findings and use their observations to inform their opinions. Trips to London museums help support their learning.
Year 3 Dissection Lesson
Each year our Year 3 children enjoy a fantastic dissection lesson, generously led by one of our medically trained parents. This is a real highlight of the year and certainly one of the perks of being ‘top of the school’. Please see the video below for a glimpse into one of these special lessons.
